Steam Vent: We decided to go to Kirishima-Yaku National Park. Kirishima-Yaku National Park is famous for its hot springs, lakes, water falls, mountains and volcanoes. In the spring time there are many wild flowers there as well, but we were there in the winter.1
The scenery from the air is equally impressive. In fact in the 1967 James Bond movie "You Only Live Twice" that was set mostly in Japan has an impressive Helicopter dog fight, some of which was filmed over Kirishima-Yaku National Park. Also in the movie the S.P.E.C.T.R.E. base that looks like green lake is a scale replica of a lake in Kirishima-Yaku National Park. One and half years later we went to another location2 used in "You Only Live Twice" which is about 85kms to the South West of Kirishima-Yaku National Park and in 2005 we went to Himeji-jo (Himeji castle) which also was in the movie.3 4
The photo above is of a steam vent which continuously spews out steam that reeks of Hydrogen Sulphide (rotten egg gas).
